DARE involved in a study on participatory citizenship: learning citizenship matters
The Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (DARE) Network was recently involved in the report “Participatory Citizenship in the European Union“, funded by the European Commission and carried out with eight partners in seven European countries. The research is investigating citizens’ participation in society, communities and politics and tries to find strategies to encourage further involvement. Among the key findings, an emphasis should be placed on learning citizenship in and outside the school walls as a correlation between engagement in learning and politics has been found. Disadvantaged groups should especially be targeted . Moreover, the study warns of the dangers of too much emphasis on economic policies; participatory citizenship and social cohesion, that are strongly interrelated with competitiveness, shall be reinforced as well.
