MFF trialogue negotiations have started
Trialogue negotiations between the Commission, Parliament and Council have started on 13 May to find a consensus on the MFF 2014-2020. Yet MEP Alain Lamassoure, Chair of the BUDG Committee, had warned Member States that negotiations would be immediately stopped if the ECOFIN Council of 14 May was unable to meet the Parliament’s demands on the EU’s 2013 budget. Finance ministers agreed to pay the €11,2 billion requested by the Parliament, at least partially (€7,3 billion). MEP Helga Trüpel, Vice-president of the CULT Committee and member of the BUDG Committee, said in a press release: “Parliament must continue to insist on its core demands, including a substantial increase in budget lines for research, education and competitiveness.” The Parliament is supposed to approve the MFF at the beginning of July.
