Basic skills for all: a renewed commitment for Education and Development

Institutional news -

The European Commission renewed on 23 May its commitment to making education more equal and of a higher quality during a High level event in Brussels. The UNESCO’ “Education for all Global Monitoring Report”, linked with the Millennium Development Goals, state that improvement in early childhood care and education have been too slow. Commissioners Piebalgs (Development) and Vassiliou (Education) committed to ensuring basic education and the acquisition of basic skills for every child by 2030, in the developing world but also within the EU where 1 in 5 pupils have difficulties reading and writing.
